Productinformation
Chinese Cabbage variety Granaat (Brassica pekinensis)
The leaves of this variety are a vibrant green color and have a slightly savoyed texture. It is known for its sweet and mild flavor, making it a popular choice for salads, stir-fries, and pickling. Keep in mind that Chinese cabbage is a cool-season crop that thrives in lower temperatures and prefers well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If you sow this member of the cabbage family too early your plants will start to flower. It can be prone to pests.
Sowing and harvesting
- Start in July and August for an autumn harvest;
- Protect seedlings with mesh;
- Start in CD60, 77, or 40 cell trays and plant out seedlings around 4 weeks later depending on
the cell size and how soon the roots have filled the cells. - Chinese cabbage is ready to harvest when the heads are firm and the leaves are crisp. Cut the head off at the base of the plant using a sharp knife. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
Advice and tips
- It needs consistent moisture to grow well. Water the plants deeply once a week, or more often if the weather is dry. Be careful not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot.;
- Space 35 to 40 centimeters apart for descent-size hearts.
- Growing Chinese cabbage can be challenging. Don’t give up if your first year is unsuccessful.
- Make sure to harvest all heads before the first severe frost.
