Productinformation
Chives variety Prager (Allium schoenoprasum)
Did you know that Chives belongs to the garlic family? The plant is related to bulb-forming plants such as onions, leeks, and garlic. You can use the green thin sprouts but also the flowers. The plant blooms in June and July with blue-pink-violet umbels and attracts pollinators. Wild chives still occur in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Just like basil you can grow chives in pots around the house as an ornamental herb. By the end of summer, you can continue to grow them indoors on a windowsill to harvest the sprouts during winter as a garnish for soups.
Location
- sunny spot or partial shade
- can also be grown in (terracotta) pots
- Bring plants indoors in winter for a continued harvest
Sowing and harvesting
- Sow seeds in spring and summer
- Plants grow well when you grow multiple seeds in one cell
- Sow in cd60, 77-cell, or 40-cell seed trays. Can also be direct sown.
