Productinformation

Small annual Lupine avalune Lilac and White (Lupinus hartwegii) flower seeds
Lupine hartwegii is an annual type of lupine. This cute lilac en white only grows 40 cm tall. Due to the shorter stems they look great in pots. Maybe this lupine is not the perfect cut flower. But, for a number of reasons it had to be included: The plants are easy to grow, flower early and in just 11 weeks after sowing, the scent is amazing, they do very well in pots, and the range of colors is fantastic. Although it is not a great cut flower you can use the flower for small vases. Lupine lasts around 5 or 6 days after cutting.

How to grow small annual lupine from seed
If you like to add lupine to your garden, grow them from seed because it is very easy. This annual lupine germinates in a few weeks. Soaking seeds in water can help speed up the process. Plant seeds approximately 1 cm below the surface. Sow one seed per cell or pot. You can direct sow seeds but slugs and snails love lupines. If you start seeds in seed trays or pots make sure they are tall or deep because lupines grow a taproot. We had great results when we started the seeds in the high 40-cell tray or P9 flower pots. The plants can tolerate some cold weather. You can start to transplant seedlings a few weeks before the last expected frost. But make sure you harden off your seedlings first or cover them with fleece for a few days.
I start seeds in late march or in April indoors, and after a few weeks I move them to the greenhouse. Depending on the weather and the wetness of the soil I transplant them into the garden or in the terracotta pots around late April to early May. You can also start them a bit later as long as you keep in mind that plants need to grow 70 to 80 days before they start to flower. I noticed they looked best in June and July. Water frequently, lupines prefer moist soil!
Cut back older stems and the plants will grow new spikes full of flowers. The hollow stems don’t last well without water. So if you cut stems it’s best to directly put them in water. The scent is fantastic. I hope you will enjoy them as much as we do!
