Antirrhinum majus, Snapdragon Orange flower seeds

If you have never grown snapdragons before then definitely add them to your garden this summer! You will love them because of the endless new flowers these plants give, attracting many bees. The flowers also last ages in the vase and come in any color you like. This orange snapdragon for example has a mix of soft pink flowers with peachy orange edges. This variety blooms best when sown in late winter or autumn and flowers in late spring or early summer.

How to grow Snapdragon from seed

Snapdragons have probably the tiniest seeds of all! Difficult to sow I have to admit but very rewarding. Because the seeds are so small and they need light to germinate I never cover the seeds. You can start seeds in the autumn if your winter is mild or in early spring in seed trays in a greenhouse polytunnel or window sill. The plants are half-hardy and can be planted out in late spring or overwintered in a greenhouse, polytunnel, or outdoors under frost cloth.

Due to the heavy tall stems, plants need support. Snapdragons will continually flower as long as you remove the dead flowers. You can cut them back deep into the plant and new shoots will appear just below where you cut the dead stems. Snapdragons are fantastic cut flowers. Pick the stems when the first few flowers are opening and strip most of the foliage. You can easily have stems lasting up to two weeks!
