If you are searching for delicate but easy-to-grow flowers to fill bouquets or decorate your romantic cottage garden, look no further than Orlaya Grandiflora or white lace flowers! These plants belong to the carrot family and grow a taproot, similar to other carrot-like plants such as Ammi Majus and Daucus Carota, which also produce fine lace flowers. Due to their long taproots, they do not transplant well, so it is recommended to either directly sow the seeds or start them in deep trays or pots.

How do you grow orlaya or white lace flowers from seed?
Growing your own orlaya from seed is not difficult, though germination can be a bit tricky. Seeds require fluctuating temperatures to germinate, which can be achieved by storing them in the fridge for three weeks. Alternatively, you can sow seeds in autumn, particularly if you have a greenhouse or cold frame. Direct sowing is possible as long as the soil is not waterlogged during winter. Unfortunately, our garden is too soggy, so I sow seeds in deep trays and transplant them in early spring. I have found the plants to be very hardy, and I do not need to protect the seedlings with a frost cover.

You can also sow orlaya seeds in spring, under a cold frame or in a small propagator to protect them from rain. If it is still too cold, move the seeds indoors for a few days. If germination is unsuccessful, do not give up, and try again in autumn. The results are worth the effort!

To pick orlaya flowers, wait until they are half-open. If they wilt too quickly, you may have picked them too early. Despite their delicate appearance, these flowers last well when properly cared for. If you change the water regularly, the flowers can last for up to seven days after picking. The more flowers you pick, the more you will have.

Finally, it is worth noting that orlaya seeds do not store well, so if germination is unsuccessful, it may be best to try a new pack of seeds. Additionally, autumn-sown plants tend to grow taller than those sown in spring.
