How to grow zinnias from seed?
Start sowing zinnias indoors in seed trays about 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost date. Plant out the zinnia seedlings after all chance of pre-frost has passed. Zinnias can also be sown directly as soon as the weather is outside. Please note that they cannot withstand frost!
Zinnias need full sun. They do well in warm areas, as long as they get enough moisture. They like rich soil and grow best on compost or fertilizer that slowly releases nutrients. Halfway through or at the end of the flowering period, you can give them an extra dose of fertilizer. Zinnias should be given extra water weekly if it doesn’t rain much. Prevent the leaves from getting too wet to prevent disease.
Zinnias are not difficult to grow, except in extremely humid summers which can sometimes cause plants to get powdery mildew. Protect young plants from slugs and snails. Remove dead flowers regularly to support new growth.
