How to grow zinnias from seed?
Start sowing zinnias indoors in seed trays about 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost date or later in spring. Plant out the zinnia seedlings after all chance of frost has passed. Zinnias can also be sown directly as soon as there is no more frost expected but due to slugs we never recommend this. Don’t sow your seeds too early because zinnias can not handle cold weather.
Zinnias need full sun. They do well in warm areas, as long as they get enough moisture. They like rich soil and grow best on compost or fertilizer that slowly releases nutrients. Halfway through or at the end of the flowering period, you can give them an extra dose of fertilizer. Zinnias should be given extra water weekly if it doesn’t rain much. Prevent the leaves from getting too wet to prevent disease.
Zinnias are not difficult to grow, except in extremely humid summers which can sometimes cause plants to get powdery mildew. Protect young plants from slugs and snails. If you remove dead flowers regularly the plants will give you more new flowers all summer long! We also love to use zinnias in flower arrangements. You can pick the flowers when the stems are sturdy and the flowerheads no long wiggle on the stem.
