How can I grow eucalyptus Silverdollar from seeds?
Growing eucalyptus from seed is not as difficult as thought. Keep in mind you store the seed in the fridge as soon as they arrive. Sow them in seed trays in a warm and light spot. for example on a heat mat in the greenhouse or in a windowsill with plenty of light. Do not cover the seeds because they need light to germinate. Germination can be slow, don’t give up too soon. You can start seeds from late winter until the beginning of summer. We had the most success when started the seed in 40 cell trays and transplanted it to the 15 cell tray as soon as the seedlings are around 3 to 5 cm tall. Young plants are first kept in big pots and planted out the next spring, but if you can plant them in a sunny sheltered spot you can plant them out in the garden. minor frost will not damage the plants but you might have to protect the plants in the first year if the winter is very cold.
Only cut mature branches. Young branches tend to wilt sooner after cutting. Silverdollar eucalyptus is also a great variety to dry upside down and use in dried flower arrangements.
