How to sow and care for Nasturtium/Tropaeolum plants

Tropaeolum, also known as nasturtium, is incredibly easy to grow. Start by sowing seeds in your greenhouse or under cover in the spring, then plant out the seedlings after the frost has passed. Although you can also direct sow the seeds, we generally avoid this method except for carrots. Our experience with direct sowing is limited, but we know rabbits tend to eat the seedlings before they fully sprout.

Nasturtium foliage and flowers can be used as shorter cut flowers or bouquet fillers. These plants are also great for pots or raised beds. Nasturtiums are vigorous growers, so regularly cut them back if you prefer the plants to stay smaller. One plant in a medium-sized pot is more than sufficient. Enjoy the vibrant blooms and the ease of growing these delightful plants!
