How to Grow Snapdragon from Seed

Growing snapdragons from seed can be challenging due to their tiny size, but the results are highly rewarding. Because the seeds are so small and need light to germinate, do not cover them with soil.

Sowing Seeds: You can start seeds in the autumn if your winter is mild, or in early spring in seed trays placed in a greenhouse, polytunnel, or on a windowsill.

Transplanting: Snapdragons are half-hardy and can be planted out in late spring once the danger of frost has passed.

Support: Due to their tall, heavy stems, the plants will need support to prevent them from toppling over.

Maintenance: Snapdragons will continually flower as long as you remove the dead flowers. You can cut them back deeply into the plant, and new shoots will appear just below where you cut the stems.

Cut Flowers: Snapdragons are fantastic cut flowers. Pick the stems when the first few flowers are opening and strip most of the foliage. With proper care, stems can last up to two weeks in a vase.
