Cultivate Vibrant Rocket for Bold Flavors in Your Salad

Understanding Rocket Varieties

Rocket comes in several varieties, each with its own unique qualities:

- Broad Leaf Rocket: This variety has larger, smoother leaves and a slightly milder flavor compared to its prickly counterpart. It's ideal for those who prefer a less intense peppery taste.

- Prickly Leaf Rocket: Known for its deeply lobed leaves and vibrant, spicy flavor, Prickly Leaf Rocket is a favorite among culinary enthusiasts looking to add a strong flavor kick to their dishes.

Optimal Growing Conditions

Rocket prefers cool to moderate temperatures and can be grown in most temperate regions. It thrives in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Planting rocket in partial shade can help prevent bolting in warmer weather, especially for the prickly leaf variety which is more sensitive to heat.

Sowing and Care

Sow rocket seeds directly into the soil about 0.5 cm deep, spacing them approximately 15 cm apart. Or sow them indoors in a seed tray, we recommend the 77-cell shallow tray. Rocket can be sown successively every two to three weeks to ensure a continuous harvest. Water consistently to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, as rocket is particularly sensitive to drying out, which can also intensify its peppery flavor.

Harvesting for Peak Flavor

Rocket is attractive to flea beetles and slugs, which can be managed organically with diatomaceous earth or protective netting. To prevent bolting, especially in the prickly leaf variety, provide shade and maintain consistent soil moisture. Bolting can be triggered by long daylight hours and high temperatures, resulting in bitter leaves and reduced production.

Flavour Changes

Growing rocket at certain times of the year adjusts the flavor. The more sun exposure rocket gets, the spicier it gets. If you enjoy a mild flavor, try sowing them in early spring.
