How to Grow Coreopsis from Seed

Growing coreopsis from seed is straightforward and rewarding. Start seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost date. Use seed trays and lightly cover the seeds as they need light to germinate. Utilizing a heating mat can speed up germination, with the first seedlings typically emerging within two to three weeks.

After germination, move the seedlings to a cooler place to prevent them from becoming long and thin. Before planting the seedlings outdoors, it's crucial to harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions. Once the seedlings are robust, plant them in the garden at a distance of 30 to 40 cm apart.

For direct sowing, wait until after the last frost when the soil has warmed up. Sow the seeds directly into well-prepared garden soil, ensuring they receive plenty of sunlight. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, as they also need light to germinate outdoors. Keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate.

Coreopsis plants flower relatively early in the season and, with regular deadheading, will continue to bloom until the first frost. This variety, also known as tickseed, makes an excellent cut flower. Pick stems when about one-third of the flowers are open, preferably in the cooler parts of the day to prevent wilting. The flowers typically last around five days.

Enhance your garden with the vibrant and long-lasting blooms of coreopsis, perfect for borders and bouquets. Whether starting indoors or direct sowing, coreopsis adds beauty and resilience to any garden setting.
