How to Grow Beach Sunflowers from Seed

Beach sunflowers are slightly frost-resistant and germinate quickly, making them an easy and rewarding plant to grow. Start your seeds a few weeks before the last expected frost date. Because these sunflowers bloom just 60 to 70 days after sowing, you can sow seeds later in the season as well. To extend the flowering period, sow once in late March and again in early June.

If you start seeds indoors, use deep seed trays (40 deep or 28 deep) to accommodate their rapid growth. Transplant the seedlings into the garden about 4 weeks after sowing. For early flowers, transplant to 28 deep trays, 15 deep trays, or P9 plant pots. While direct sowing is an option, starting seeds in trays is recommended to protect them from birds and slugs. Once established, transplant the seedlings to their final location.

Beach sunflowers can grow into large bushes (up to 1 meter in diameter), so avoid overcrowding. If your garden space is limited, grow fewer plants to manage their size. The more you cut, the more flowers you'll get. For a prolonged blooming phase, plant 2 or 3 batches at 4-6 week intervals. Pinching (removing the seedling tips) when they reach 40 to 50 cm helps maintain a compact structure.

Beach sunflowers thrive in full sun and require minimal care, making them perfect for difficult-to-water spots at the far end of your garden. Ensure they get plenty of sunlight for optimal growth. If growing for cut flowers, space two plants on a 75 cm bed. Keep in mind that navigating between rows might be a bit challenging, but it's worth it for the beautiful blooms.

By following these guidelines, you can enjoy vibrant and plentiful beach sunflowers all season long.
