Description

Phlox Drummondii Grandiflora Sugar Stars features stunning purple-colored flowers with a white heart. These annual phlox are easy to germinate and require minimal attention, though neighborhood bunnies love them too. Fortunately, the plants grow quickly and tolerate being cut back.

Sugar Stars start flowering early on short stems, and as they continue to bloom, the stems grow longer. This makes them perfect garden plants early in the season and fantastic, long-lasting cut flowers from mid-summer to autumn. They are versatile and can be planted in pots or hanging baskets. Last year, we planted them with dahlias in large iron tubs, creating a beautiful display.

How to Grow Annual Phlox Sugar Stars from Seed

Growing Annual Phlox from seed is straightforward and rewarding. Start the seeds indoors or in a greenhouse from February to June. To ensure germination, keep the seeds in the dark and provide some additional warmth to speed up the process. Use good quality compost in seed trays and start the seeds in 77-cell trays, transplanting them to larger pots later or directly into the garden once the weather allows, usually around April. Although direct sowing is an option, it hasn't been tested extensively.

Transplant the seedlings outdoors when the weather warms up, typically around April. Ensure the plants receive adequate support as the stems grow longer. Phlox thrive in pots, combined with taller plants, or in hanging baskets. If new compost was applied in the autumn, additional fertilizer is generally not necessary.

It's important to note that storing seeds for over two years may result in lower germination rates, so it's best to use fresh seeds. By following these guidelines, you can enjoy the vibrant beauty of Annual Phlox Sugar Stars in your garden.
