How to Grow Annual Lupine from Seed

Adding annual lupine to your garden is easy and rewarding. To get started, soak the seeds in water to speed up the germination process. Plant the seeds approximately 1 cm below the surface, sowing one or two seeds per cell or pot. While direct sowing is an option, it's better to start them in tall or deep seed trays or pots to protect them from slugs and snails and to accommodate their taproots. We had great success using the deep 40-cell trays or P9 flower pots.

Lupine seedlings can tolerate some cold weather, so you can start transplanting them a few weeks before the last expected frost. Ensure you harden off the seedlings first or cover them with fleece for a few days. I start seeds indoors in late March or April, move them to the greenhouse after a few weeks, and transplant them into the garden or terracotta pots around late April to early May. You can also start them a bit later, keeping in mind that the plants need 70 to 80 days to grow before they start to flower. They look best in June and July.

Water the plants frequently, as lupines prefer moist soil. Cut back older stems to encourage the plants to grow new spikes full of flowers.

The hollow stems don't last well without water, so it's best to put cut stems directly into water. The scent is fantastic, and I hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
