How to Grow Eucalyptus Silverdollar from Seeds

Growing eucalyptus from seed is easier than you might think. Start by storing your eucalyptus seeds in the fridge as soon as they arrive. Sow the seeds in seed trays placed in a warm, light spot, such as a windowsill with plenty of light or on a heat mat in the greenhouse. Do not cover the seeds because they need light to germinate. Germination can be slow, so be patient and don’t give up too soon.

You can start sowing seeds from late winter until early summer. For best results, start seeds in 60/77/40-cell trays and transplant them to 15-cell trays when seedlings reach about 3 cm tall. Keep young plants in large pots initially and plant them out the following spring. If planting directly in the garden, choose a sunny, sheltered spot. Minor frost won't damage the plants, but you may need to protect them during their first winter if it’s particularly cold.

Only cut mature branches, as young branches tend to wilt sooner after cutting. Silverdollar eucalyptus is also great for drying. Hang the branches upside down to use in dried flower arrangements. For more detailed information, visit our blog on how to grow eucalyptus from seed.
