Moles and voles are the second most common enemy of every gardener who has to contend with these visitors (number one, of course, being the slugs and snails). Fortunately, tools have been developed to catch moles and voles underground. You can achieve this by placing a trap in an active tunnel.

First, put on your gloves and rub the trap with soil to neutralize the scent. Now it’s time to locate the tunnel. Insert a stick or metal rod into the soil until you reach an area where you no longer feel resistance beneath the surface. This is the hollow part of the tunnel. Continue digging until you uncover the hollow area, usually a few inches below ground. Activate the trap with the pin and position it so that moles or voles will pass through it when they traverse the tunnel. As soon as the animal triggers the pin, the trap will spring.

After you’ve set the trap in place, it’s crucial to cover the opening with a dark bucket or another object. This prevents light and fresh air from entering the tunnel. If you managed to set the trap in an active tunnel the trap will go off within 2 days. If you did not catch anything within a few days then it’s time to try another spot.
