Purple Kale – Scarlet
Kale is probably the most famous vegetable for autumn and winter. But did you know you can also grow this beautiful purple kale? Kale plants are easy to grow and can be harvested for a long time during autumn and winter. In The Netherlands, it is combined with potatoes and bacon strips for the classical stamppot.
Sowing and harvesting
- Start in May – June for autumn and winter harvest
- To enjoy kale earlier in the season, sow seeds in March – April
- Start in 60, 77, or 40 cells and plant out seedlings 3-4 weeks later.
Advice and tips
- Winterhardy vegetable;
- Remove lower leaves frequently
- Space 35 – 40 cm apart
