Tips to grow delphinium (larkspur) from seeds

Larkspur, or Delphinium, requires cold stratification to germinate. Sow seeds in autumn in a greenhouse or sheltered spot, or place them in the fridge or freezer for three weeks before sowing in seed trays. Avoid using a heat mat. Direct sowing is possible, but they dislike humid, rainy weather, so we prefer the fridge method followed by placing seed trays in a greenhouse or covered area.

Germination can be slow, so be patient. Our seeds are high-quality with a good germination rate. Sow two seeds per cell. Once seedlings outgrow their cells, transplant them into pots with high-quality compost and liquid feed if needed. Plant them out in spring with additional compost and support.

Cut back dead flowers to promote new growth. Larkspur is a great cut flower; harvest when one-third of the flowers have opened and remove most of the foliage. You can also dry the stems for dried flower arrangements.
