How to Grow Rudbeckia hirta from Seed

To grow Rudbeckia from seed, start by sowing your seeds from late winter to late spring. Rudbeckia hirta is a short-lived perennial or biennial but is often grown as a half-hardy annual. Our winters can be too cold for plants to survive. The seeds germinate best in a warm environment, so consider starting them indoors or in a greenhouse on a heat mat if the weather is still cold.

When sowing indoors, use seed trays and place them in a warm spot. Do not cover the seeds with soil as they need light to germinate. Press them lightly onto the surface of the soil instead. After about six to eight weeks, or once the seedlings are strong enough, transplant them into the garden.

Rudbeckia prefers full sun and well-drained soil. With proper care, your Rudbeckia plants will thrive and add vibrant color to your garden.
