How I Transformed from a Struggling Gardener to a Successful Grower—and Now I'm Helping Others Do the Same

For years, I struggled to grow my own food.

When I first started, I simply scattered some seeds in my garden and waited.

Four weeks later, I was back to square one.

Poor germination, or everything was eaten before it had a chance to grow.

The garden was even emptier than before I began.

Over the following months and years, I tried countless different products and methods.

But the results were always the same—very little success.

Just enough harvest to occasionally add something to a dish.

At some point, I’d had enough. It was time to understand why it wasn’t working.

The Turning Point: Discovering the Solution

On my quest to find a solution, I stumbled upon a product that initially seemed too good to be true.

After all, many products promise to be the answer, but in the end, you’re left with a house full of things that don’t work.

What finally convinced me to try it was that it was recommended by Charles Dowding.

Charles Dowding's Endorsement

Charles Dowding

Charles Dowding is one of the pioneers of the No-Dig gardening method and has over 40 years of experience in vegetable gardening.

As I read more about how he used this product, I discovered how popular it was in England. Every gardener was raving about it, considering it the most effective way to start growing your own food.

What stood out most:
  • The ease of use.
  • How strong the plants became.
  • The increased harvest from your garden.

The Transformation: From Struggling to Thriving

Through all the information online, I finally understood how farmers are so successful at growing large, nutrient-rich food.

To explain it quickly:

To understand how to eat from your own garden, it’s important to know what leads to a big harvest.

It starts here:

The seed contains the nutrients for the germination (the beginning) of the vegetable.

As soon as the seed gets wet, it uses these nutrients to grow towards the first light.

Because there’s very little nutrition in the seed (just enough for the first few days), the soil where your plant grows is crucial!

This means: Where the seed starts has a huge impact on the rest of the plant’s growth.

The Problem:

The more resistance the seed encounters during its initial growth, the smaller the harvest.

That means things like too much water, too little light, too heavy compost, pests, or competition for space result in less yield.

Seeds that you simply scatter in the garden face a lot of resistance and danger.

I finally understood why everything I had tried before just couldn’t work.

My First Successful Harvest

The Start Determines the Outcome

So, how can you ensure you harvest plenty from your own garden?

You do this by giving your seeds the most optimal growing conditions.

For this, you need control over:

  • The medium in which your seedling grows (compost/potting soil)
  • The moisture level
  • No competition for space
  • Protection from pests

Only if you provide your seedling with optimal conditions will it quietly flourish into a massive harvest.

The Game-Changer: Sturdy Seed Trays

Ordered and now let's wait..

After two weeks it arrived. The product felt solid, but… how did my plants grow?

My first choice was my personal favorite from the garden, beetroots.

Following Charles Dowding’s advice, I planted four seeds per cell and watered them well.

After 7 days, it was time—the first seeds germinated, and green tips emerged above my compost.

And believe it or not, a month later… perfect seedlings ready to transplant into the garden. I had never grown such healthy plants before.

Sharing the Success: Bringing the Solution to You

The harvest 7 weeks later was not only enough to eat but also enough to share. In my enthusiasm, I had planted more than 100 red beets in the garden.

And best of all, incredibly delicious, healthy, pesticide-free food.

Naturally, I immediately ordered more seed trays, and now I start everything in them: lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, onions, peas, tomatoes, zucchini, and more.

A whole garden full of delicious food all year round.

Week after week, food grows in my front yard, all started in the seed trays.

Looking around on all community pages for gardeners I noticed the same struggles as mine.

Time for a solution for all

I decided to take the gable and make the sturdy seed trays available for all European gardeners.

We all deserve to grow our own pesticide free food with ease.

Professional growers have been using special seed trays for years that make growing plants much easier and more successful.

Over the past few years, thousands of home gardeners have started using these sturdy seed trays, and they’ve received endless positive reviews.

Such fine quality, I'm going to order more right away!

The seed trays are sturdy and of great quality and I could have ordered more immediately without worry.
With finger pressure from below, the plants can be popped right out of the trays. Safe in children’s hands, too.
The trays stack easily, so great for storage for the next season.
I am going to order the rest right away.

Which Seed Tray Do You Need?

Something I struggled with myself—knowing which seed tray to buy.

We (The Farm Dream) offer a wide range of different sizes, so figuring out what works for you can sometimes be tricky.

Fortunately, there’s a simple quiz to help with this.

Fill in what you want to grow, and you’ll get instant advice on what to grow in which tray.

My Personal Favorites:

I’m a big fan of the 40-cell low, 77-cell low, and 40-cell deep seed trays.

I use the 77-cell for all my lettuce varieties.

The 40-cell for onions, red beets, leeks, and radishes.

The 40-cell deep for all my cabbages like broccoli and pointed cabbage.

Pro Tip:

Shipping costs aren’t free, so if you know you’re going to grow more, it’s better to order a few.

I’ve already ordered three times, but I should have done it all at once.

One last tip: Depending on where you grow your plants (I use a windowsill with an extra lamp), a water tray is really handy.

At first, I didn’t use one, but my windowsill didn’t appreciate that…

So, choose a few nice trays and start growing successfully!

Conclusion: From One Gardener to Another

Sturdy seed trays have made it much easier to grow my own food.

I’m very happy with The Farm Dream’s offerings and the success these trays provide.

My plants grow better, and the harvest is enormous.

A Few Drawbacks:

  1. The information on the website isn’t always very clear. We are working on this.
  2. The seed trays are often out of stock, which means you might have to wait—a long time if you’re in the middle of growing, sorry about that!

If you got any questions, give me a call or send a email and I will help you out!
